Showcase your awareness

Promoting yourself needn’t be equated with dramatic sales talk. In fact using blog commenting space for sales promotion is taboo.

On the other hand, simply adding a line of appreciation just to earn a link is not the right way either. Rather, invest some time in reading and comprehending the entire post and only then adding an insightful comment – comprising a minimum of three sentences – to enrich the conversation.

In this manner, blog commenting offers a good platform to showcase your awareness and experience and thus grow your brand.

Engage with the blogger

Some blogs make for extremely insightful and enjoyable reading. Why not try and develop a connect with those bloggers?

Following them on Twitter and other social media increases the exposure of their writings. Once they see you enriching the quality of their blog with well-thought of comments, they will be attracted to read and endorse your blog too.

Foster relations with the community

It’s quite likely that visitors of a particular blog, where you regularly submit comments on aren’t reading your blog as yet. The good news is that commenting on blogs is a great way to share your experiences and opinions, and establish yourself amongst a completely new set of readers.

Further, if you are a regular contributor of interesting and relevant comments, it could mean more opportunities for your blog. Replying directly to the comments of blog readers and initiating a conversation or debate on a specific subject, is great way to be recognized too. Replying to the first 4-5 comments enhances visibility within the community.

Finally, remember to be proactive on your blog too. While there aren’t many SEO advantages, blog commenting is a great tool for networking and building brand awareness.

Monitor your blog on a daily basis; always allow comments on your blog; and be sure to reply to those who have queries after reading your posts.

Do note that a lot of individuals commenting on blogs are bloggers too and there are benefits to be gained from having a good reputation among your peers.

  1. Apart from the SEO perspective, blog commenting is really about making friends. A poorly written comment or irrelevant comment makes another enemy out there while the quality and relevant one gets to be somebody in the community. When I started as a blogger, I used to drop comments like “Good Post!” or “Thanks for Sharing” where I come to think of it now, it is pretty childish. I believe that writing a good comment will give a good traffic as well to the blog that the commentator is advertising.

  2. People who really like blogging and who take it seriously will try to foster good relations with other bloggers and share experience, but at the same time there will always be people who just comment to get some links or some other things. Everybody has the right to choose.

  3. Blog commenting is one of the best link building process so it is important to maximize its benefits. The good thing about blog commenting is it help in building a community within a blog because everybody can leave useful insights after each post. So overall, a blog owner must spend time to make pertinent answers to at least some of the blog reader’s commentators.

  4. I believe that blog commenting can do so much to increase traffic back to your website. This is a very easy way yet a delicate one because you might be wasting your comments and links if you do not submit quality comments. I also agree that relationship with the blogger, and maybe with other commenters too is so essential.

  5. Hi Kaushal,
You are right on with your tips. Blog commenting has been one of my best tools in not only promoting my blog, but also building relationship with other blogggers. And those relationships have helped to learn a lot more things that otherwise I would have never learned.

I juts hope, spammers could realize how genuine commenting could help both side. Thanks.

  6. I appreciate this article, and this site, because it seems to be promoting respect on both sides. Allowing comments on blogs to have dofollow links is respectful to readers of the blog, while writing thoughtful comments on the content of the blog is respectful to the writers.

Genuine comments containing links are no different then handing someone a business card while your at a networking event. It’s mutually beneficial when done correctly.

  7. With the advent of Scrapebox and other automatic blog comment bots it’s becoming harder and harder to shift through the garbage and actually engage in debates on some of the better blogs.

One thing that really ticks me off is people that leave comments under the guise of an engaged user asking for active participation, then never returning to respond to any of the following comments… link building fail.

“One thing that really ticks me off is people that leave comments under the guise of an engaged user asking for active participation, then never returning to respond to any of the following comments… link building fail.” – I completely agree with you there Sebastian, on all but one thing, I would replace “link building fail” with “community building fail”.

Thanks for taking the time to read my article and comment Sebastian, welcome to the community 🙂

  8. It’s essential for blogger to stick together, and commenting is a great way for like-minded bloggers to become closer. Obviously, commenting on blogs might help you create good links, but it is usually the social perks of this action that motivates writers to do it on a regular basis.
Moreover, because you feel nice when someone comments on your hard worked article, it feels nice to receive a comment, so why not return the favor?

    • Christopher Roberts

      Thanks for the comment Anna.

Do you feel the whole commenting and community aspect of blogging is moving off the blog and into the social sphere?
I feel I myself am commenting less, and have noticed many [popular] blogs suffering from low counts.

      Your thoughts welcome 🙂
